Primary
Literature or Primary Research as opposed to Secondary Research
History:
Primary sources: Materials
were created during the time period being studied or
were created at a later date by a participant in the events being studied (as in
the case of memoirs). They reflect the individual viewpoint of a participant
or observer. (Diaries, newspaper and magazine articles,
speeches, laws, opinion polls, statistics, photographs, letters)
Secondary sources: interprets or analyzes an historical event or
phenomenon. It is generally at least one step removed from the event and is
often based on primary sources. (scholarly or popular books and articles,
reference books and textbooks.)
Sciences
Primary Resources… research notes, journal articles on new advances
Secondary research…journal articles that discusses a number of
research articles. Works that interpret or analyze
the content of the primary sources. Also, most reference books, text books, and
scholarly publications are secondary resources.
